Fire kills thousands of turkeys on farm in Duplin Co.

DUPLIN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – About 6,600 turkeys died Thursday morning when their home caught fire around 5:30.

The Horne Farms in the Back Swamp Area of Duplin County has been family owned for more than 40 years.  They say the turkeys that were killed in the fire had just arrived to the farm Tuesday.

The son-in-law of the owners Neil and Annis Horne said he heard a loud noise and then saw the turkey house on fire.

Investigators say the fire started in the front of the house, but the cause of the blaze is unknown at this time.  The Hornes think the fire was electrical because it is an old building.

Despite their loss, the family said they plan to continue farming.  Turkeys are raised on the farm, then sold to Nash Johnson in Rose Hill.
