BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The AARP is sending out emails with a personalized touch as part of their new marketing campaign, but not everyone is fond of the idea.
The AARP sent emails last Friday featuring Oak Island. The message features fake news stories from the made-up Oak Island News. They add pictures from a general stock of photos to give the story that "special touch."
One of the stories claims a lack of social security is forcing Oak Island seniors to move into cardboard shacks, which has Mayor Betty Wallace upset about the entire email campaign.
Although it may look like a scam, Wallace said the AARP told her the email was sent as part of its grassroots campaign.
