PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Investigators say the man wanted for shooting his girlfriend three times in the chest early Tuesday morning is also a suspect in a murder that happened a little over a year ago in Pender County.
Police believe 25-year-old Dwayne Moore shot Kayla Floyd in the Cypress Grove Apartments around 1:45 a.m. According to District Attorney Ben David, Moore is also a suspect in the murder of 23-year-old Tiffany Dawkins.
Late Wednesday afternoon, Dawkins' family met with David in a meeting behind closed doors. The family was tight-lipped about what they discussed. However, they did say they left the meeting feeling confident that Moore would end up behind bars.
Dawkins was killed a few days after Christmas in 2009. Her body was found on the side of Highway 133 in Rocky Point after being shot multiple times.
Her mother, Kim Thomas, said she has always believed Moore was behind her daughter's death. According to family members, Dawkins dated Moore for a little more than a year. They said Moore threatened Dawkins just days before she was murdered.
"Just by the threatening accusations that he said, you know, saying that he was going to shoot her, saying that he was going to shoot my mom," said Dawkins' sister Brittany Hockabout. "That's what really makes us believe that he did it."
A candlelight vigil was held in Dawkins' honor a few months ago. Family members were hoping whoever killed the mother of two children would soon be arrested. Loved ones have done their best to ensure her case doesn't go cold and hope Tuesday's shooting will help give them closure.
"I don't want to get too excited in case they can't pinpoint her murder to him, but at least he'll go down for something," said Dawkins' sister Michelle Ikner.
In an unusual twist of fate, family members say Dawkins and Floyd are distant relatives. Dawkins' sisters said Floyd is the aunt of Dawkins' nephew.
"It was devastating to know that she would date him and actually what he did to her," said Hockabout. "But love is blind I guess. It was with Tiffany, and I guess it was with her."
Police say Moore also has a criminal history. He's had several run-ins with the law, including assault on a child, assault on a female, possessing and making drugs and embezzlement.
Investigators say Moore could be driving a 1999 blue Honda Accord with license plate number ZPK4854.
Family members said the D.A. was interested in hearing their thoughts about where Moore might be hiding. The family said they don't know, but believe he fled the night of the shooting and is likely far from Wilmington. However, they remain hopeful he will be captured.
