Robbery considered motive in Tabor City double homicide

Posted: Updated:

TABOR CITY, NC (WECT)- The Columbus County Sheriff's Department has released new information Monday into what authorities are investigating as a double homicide.

A report of multiple shots fired came into the 911 center just before 7:30 Sunday evening.

Deputies say Lee Otis Vereen, 42 from Longs, Sc, was taken in a personal vehicle to a hospital in Loris, where he died of a gunshot wound.

Deputies also found the body of Vereen's brother Jerome Williams, 39.

According to investigators, the two were brothers.

"Disturbing for anybody to end up in a situation like this, but then when you've got two brothers, two members from the same family, you have to wonder what that mother is really going through, what she's experiencing. Like I said earlier, with it being this time of the year and the season, it's got to be traumatic," said Mjr. Lewis Hatcher.

Deputies now say it looks like the men were being robbed and both were shot in the back.

Both bodies are in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.  The Sheriff's Office and SBI are investigating.
