Boseman says Governor has conflict with Titan

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County State Senator Julia Boseman (D) sent North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue a letter Tuesday, asking her to delay the approval of an air permit for a new cement plant in the county.

Wednesday, she questioned Perdue's potential conflicts with the project.

Carolinas Cement Company, which has plans to build a Titan America cement plant in the Castle Hayne area, has hired the law firm of Womble Carlyle to lobby on behalf of the project.  Womble Carlyle employs Perdue's son, Garrett.

"I think that that is really walking a thin line and unfortunately there's been too many politicians who have cross that line," Senator Julia Boseman said Wednesday.  "I think that to have a family member lobbying the state, I think it crosses a line."

The company has stated in previous news reports that Garrett Perdue works only on economic development projects across the country and does not lobby in Raleigh.  The website for Womble Carlyle states that he works closely with former NC Governor Jim Hunt.

Earlier this month, Carolinas Cement turned down state and county tax incentives in order to speed along a permitting process.  Boseman wants the plant to still go through a strict state environmental review prior to getting its permit.
