Woman from WB competes in Filter For Good film project

Posted: Updated:

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – A woman from New Hanover County is making a difference in the community while becoming a finalist for a film contest sponsored by Sundance.

Danielle Richardet and her family spend a lot of time at the beach picking up cigarette butts one-by-one.  They go to Wrightsville Beach twice a week to throw away as much litter as they can find in twenty minutes.

"I've always been irritated by the cigarette and litter problem," said Richardet.

There are signs posted at the beach discouraging beachgoers from littering on the sand, but many don't seem to care.  Richardet and her family have been picking up thousands of pieces of litter, especially those pesky cigarette butts, for months.

Richardet is now a finalist in a contest sponsored by the Sundance Film Festival. There are fifteen finalists left from a list of 150. The list will be narrowed down to three. If she is selected, a short film will be made about her venture. It will later appear on television, and perhaps, at the Sundance Film Festival.
