WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington Downtown, Inc. has a history of helping businesses get off the ground.

The organization's latest success story is Crow Hill, a restaurant that opened this month in the former Cafe Phoenix location on Front Street.

WDI helped Crow Hill secure a start up loan.  They provided the capitol the business needed to get approved.

"They made a downtown loan available to us," explained Crow Hill owner, Derrick Cook.  "It's really hard to find people who will invest in you in this kind of economy and friends and family only go so far.  So, having them support us really gave us a great feeling that we were welcome here. That our idea was a solid idea for the downtown area. That it would be well received.  So, it made us feel really confident about going into business even in a slow economy."

WDI Director, John Hinnant said the group has been offering these types of loans for entrepreneurs since the 1970s.

"It really helps the business get started," said Hinnant.  "Let's them focus on their priorities. Let's them focus on their customers and let's them focus on their product and the service they want to provide."

Hinnant explained the loan program gives downtown Wilmington an edge in attracting businesses.
