CHADBOURN, NC (WECT) - A woman in Chadbourn flagged down police early Sunday morning to confess to killing her boyfriend over the weekend.
According to Chadbourn police, Mattie Lee Kelly, 38, admitted to killing her boyfriend Friday night. She took police to the home on Strawberry Boulevard, where they found the body of Edward Jerome Jackson, 60.
Police believe Kelly may have killed Jackson by hitting him in the head three times with a hatchet.
Jackson's body is in Chapel Hill for an autopsy. Kelly is currently in jail without bond.
Neighbors say any time Jackson's name is mentioned, you see a mental picture of him sitting on his front porch.
"He would wave and speak," said Anthony Collins who knew Jackson. "He would always have that smile all the time."
Collins and Jackson met two months ago when Jackson was trying to sell his truck. The two became friends and eventually learned they were cousins.
"When I went to go look at the truck we got on the subject," explained Collins. "He asked who I was kin to and I was telling him. That's how we found out we were kin."
Friends and neighbors were shocked when they heard Jackson was killed. They said they never heard any fighting coming from the home.
Kelly remains in the Columbus County jail. Her bond has not yet been set.
