OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) - Another community in Brunswick County has gone on record against the proposed International Port to be built near Southport.
Town Council in Oak Island voted unanimously Tuesday night on a resolution opposing the billion dollar port project. Members do not believe it will bring in as many jobs as promised, and they also shared environmental concerns voiced by others not in favor of the plan.
Oak Island joined several other communities in Brunswick County that have adopted similar resolutions, including Southport and Bald Head Island.
Congressman Mike McIntyre is also on record against the project, citing security, environmental and quality of life issues.
Town leaders took the vote during their first meeting inside the new town hall. The newly completed building will also serve as the headquarters for the Police Department and a work place for other town employees. Part of the new facility also includes up-to-date technology for council meetings.
