Mountain Island Lake drowning victim identified

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (WBTV) - The body of a man who drowned in Mountain Island Lake while attempting to save his teenage daughter on Monday has been found, 24 hours after he disappeared under the water.

During a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, WBTV learned that emergency crews located Nigel Andre Mayers, 42, around 1:53 p.m. Tuesday using sonar equipment.

They'd been searching the northwest Mecklenburg County lake since Monday afternoon when they were called out to Latta Plantation Park for a possible drowning.

Mayers was fishing at Mountain Island Lake with his family, while his teen daughter was on a raft in the lake.  Emergency crews say the daughter fell into the water and Mayers went into the lake in an attempt to save her.

A passerby saw the teenager in trouble and threw a life preserver to the girl.  She was later rescued by emergency crews.

Firefighters believe Mayers got a cramp while swimming towards his daughter and went under the water.

Several people who were in the area attempted to find Mayers, but they were unsuccessful.

The teen suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

Rescuers searched the lake for nearly six hours until night fell, and went back out on Tuesday and searched for hours.

The Charlotte Fire Department divers, boats and sonar equipment were used in an effort to find Mayers' body.

The place where Mayers went under the water is between 14 to 18 feet deep one official to WBTV.
