Former sheriff named interim in Bladen County

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) – Commissioners in Bladen County appointed former sheriff Earl Storms to be the interim head of the department. Three of the five county commissioners supported his nomination during a meeting Thursday night. Storms will hold the seat until a new sheriff is elected in November.

Storms previously held the position in Bladen County from 1976 to 1994. He takes over for Steve Bunn, who retired at the end of June before his term ended. County Coroner Hubert Kinlaw took over immediately after Bunn retired, but will hand the duties over to Storms.

Two candidates are running for sheriff in November. Prentis Benston, a current employee of the sheriff's department, won the democratic primary runoff in June. He will face Billy Ward, who recently gathered enough signatures to earn a spot on the ballot as an unaffiliated candidate.
