CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - The debate over the use of the reference to God in the country's Pledge of Allegiance continues to reach new heights in New Hanover County.
A billboard proclaiming "One Nation Indivisible" went up at the corner of Sanders Road and Carolina Beach Road last week to the disappointment of some folks in the area. The North Carolina Secular Association posted the billboards across the state in an effort to spark a debate about the phrase "under God" in the pledge.
This week, a counter advertisement began with some businesses. Bowman & Associates down the road in Carolina Beach posted the phrase "One Nation Under God Always" on its marquee.
In Charlotte, someone climbed the towering billboard to deface the "indivisible" billboard with a spray-painted use of the phrase "under God."
