Michael's Seafood heads to international chowder cook-off

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - Michael McGowan owns Michael's Seafood in Carolina Beach. He also owns their now world-famous seafood chowder recipe.

"Chowder's our thing," said McGowan. "We love our chowder - the consistency of it, the creaminess of it and just the overall care that we take putting into it."

This weekend, the restaurant is defending their championship at the "Great Chowder Cook-off" in Newport, Rhode Island.

Michael's Seafood took home the title in 2009. This year, they've got 200 gallons of chowder ready to go that they hope will stack up to the competition.

In two weeks, Michael's Seafood chowder will be available in Harris Teeter stores across the country.

"The international chowder cook-off championship definitely gave us a launching board," said Kurt Vanscoy, the CEO of Michael's Seafood Chowderhouse. "I mean, that definitely put us on the map. That puts Carolina Beach on the map."

But Michael's Seafood hasn't forgotten its roots.

"We're competing for the whole state, you know," said McGowan. "We're taking the whole state of NC with us. We brought it back to NC and we want to bring it back one more time."

Michael and the rest of the chowder crew will leave Wednesday morning at 7:30 to start the more than 15 hour drive.

The competition will last from 11 to 6 on Saturday.

A deadly virus is threatening the crawfish industry in Southwest Louisiana. It's called white spot syndrome virus and it was first discovered in Thailand, but somehow it made its way to ponds in South Louisiana and specialists are struggling to find the funds to research a solution.  “The catch was increasing and increasing and then it dropped 70% and that's when you saw the dead crawfish floating in the water,” said a crawfish farmer of 34 years, Ian Garbarino.
