Seawitch Tiki Bar catches fire; restaurant open

Posted: Updated:

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - The restaurant of the Seawitch Cafe in Carolina Beach remained open Wednesday, despite a fire to the bar portion of the structure early this morning.

The fire started on the outside of the bar, destroying about 75 percent of it.  Employees are upset this happened right before the busy holiday weekend.

While the restaurant remains open, there is talk of opening a small, temporary bar.

The New Hanover County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause. The fire was contained to the Tiki Bar.

The Carolina Beach Police Department is being credited for acting quickly and calling for the evacuation of the Guy Johnson Motel as a precaution.

"The guys did a great job," said Assistant Chief Granger Soward.  "They hit the fire, knocked it down, and it was over in a matter of minutes."

The restaurant just recently reopened up a couple of months ago, after being shut down in 2007.

"We worked hard to make it what it is," said manager Brett Bostic.  "The staff has made it a wonderful place to come and have a drink and have a good time.  I'm disappointed in what has happened."
