BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC (WECT) – For the third year, residents on Bald Head Island host wounded warriors and their families, providing them with a weekend getaway.
Life can be difficult for Eric Edmonson and his father Ed. Eric was severely injured in Iraq five years ago, serving for the US Army. Now, he can't speak or walk on his own, but he can enjoy a fun vacation just as much as anyone.
"It's been a wonderful experience so far," said Ed. "They've been very kind and gracious."
While Eric spend some time checking out the Old Baldy Lighthouse, four other wounded warriors prepared for a deep sea fishing trip on the other side of the island.
Ivan Castro is excited about the smells and sounds of the water, but he lost his vision while serving in Iraq and will never be able to see the ocean again. He said he is very thankful for the kindness and hospitality his host family is showing him.
"They open up their homes and their hearts to us and it means a lot," said Castro.
The City of Jacksonville is preparing to host a Hope for Warriors event in May. The combination walk/run took place at Camp Lejeune last year. Hundreds of people participated, including wounded service members.
This year's event includes a 1 mile walk, 5K, 10K and a half marathon. Click here to register for the event.
