COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - An adolescent boy from Columbus County died after being shot Sunday afternoon.

Family members say 11-year-old Hunter Ward and his 13-year-old cousin were playing in the barn, waiting for Hunter's father to take them on an Easter egg hunt.  The two found a rifle and the 13-year-old accidentally shot Hunter in the arm; the bullet went all the way through to his side.

"My son told me his cousin didn't mean to do it," said Hunter's father LC Ward.  "It's just a bad thing."

After being shot, Hunter walked through the house to the bathroom and then began to scream.  He was taken to the hospital in Whiteville where he was pronounced dead less than five hours later.

"It was just a tragedy it happened," said Ward.  "All we have to do is keep serving the Lord."

LC said his son was an active member of the church, singing in the choir and performing in church plays.  He says Hunter was an intelligent young boy who was well liked.

According to Major Hatcher with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office, the father won't face charges because the rifle was not found in the house.  He did say, however, it is possible the 13-year-old could face charges, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Funeral arrangements have not been made at this time.
