Wilmington company turns iPhone into remote

Reported by Bob Townsend - email

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - There's a new iPhone and iPod Touch accessory that turns your system into an universal remote control.  Not only does it control your TV, but it can reach out to ceiling fans, media servers and more.

A group of inventors from New Potato Technologies in New Hanover County created the FLPR (pronounced "flipper") to mold all of your controllers into one.  According to the company's CEO the FLPR supports any devices, including:

  • TVs
  • Blue-ray DVDs
  • VCRs
  • CDs
  • projectors
  • radio receivers
  • cable sat boxes
  • AE switchers
  • iPod docks
  • media servers
  • speakers
  • shades
  • lighting
  • draperies
  • project lift mounts
  • anything you can think of

"All I have to add and it gives me a list of all of the devices that it supports," said company CEO Stuart Ross.  "By simply pressing a bunch of those, I can add a device, like our TV and how I have the ability to control, and thankfully I can also mute the volume at the same time."

Unlike other universal remote solutions for the iPhone and iPod Touch, the FLPR's extensive database of over 14,000 pre-programmed remote control codes means you don't have to spend time learning your existing remotes button by button.

The FLPR is available now online, and will go on sale Sunday, March 28th at Best Buy stores nationwide. The accessory will cost $79.99.

In the past, items created by New Potato Technologies were marketed by other companies, but now they plan to put their name on the device.  While this is the first product the company will market on its own, it will not be the last.

Inventors at New Potato Technologies have also developed a cradle for the iPhone that attaches to the handlebars of a bicycle, with another attachment near the rear wheel to measure your personal workout and progress.  That product should be on the market in June.
