WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Making the trip to the DMV isn't necessarily painful, but sometimes waiting for service can be excruciating.

Customers are waiting up to five hours to renew their license at the DMV located on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington.  They say the traffic jam in the office is starting to get out of hand.

Carrye Gaulin spent her time at the DMV reading a novel - pausing only to listen to the PA system announce the next person to be helped.  Ticket number 605, please proceed to station 6.  She started from the beginning of the book at 8:15 in the morning, and read more than 54 chapters before getting service - three hours later.

Steve Blue said he tried going to a different location in hopes the line would move more quickly – but didn't get there quite early enough to make it in line.

"At the market street location, I tried to get my driver's license, but they turned me away," explained Blue.  "[They] said they weren't giving out any more tickets."

Blue said he made it to the office Tuesday afternoon around 2:30 – the DMV closes at 4:30.

Residents say the line would move faster if more examiners were working.  Some offices are doing their best with five examiners, but the North Wilmington location is getting by with a skeleton crew of two.

According to a spokesperson from the DMV in Raleigh, statewide budget cuts have a lot to do with the number of employees, but there are some vacant jobs to be filled.  They said it takes six to eight weeks to train each examiner, so it could be some time before the positions are filled.

Employees at the DMV office on Carolina Beach Road recommend making an appointment before going to the office.  They also said duplicate licenses and ID cards can be purchased online, by clicking here.
