Help the first Honor Flight take off in April

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A new program in Wilmington is dedicated to honoring service men and women who fought for our freedom.

Honor Flight Southeastern North Carolina is a non-profit program operated by volunteers that will fly elderly service members to Washington, DC free of cost to see the World War II memorial.  They are accompanied by understanding guardians who assist with any medical or mobility needs

The inaugural trip is scheduled for April 13, when 100 veterans will fly to DC for the day.

"Many WWII veterans did not receive the honor or celebration when they came back from WWII," said Honor Flight President Jason McLeod.  "This is a great way for us to step out there and honor these fine service members."

Visiting the memorial will also give veterans a chance to embrace the past and to never forget those who didn't return from battle.

Stay with WECT and wect.com for special coverage of the event beginning at 7:30 Tuesday night.
