WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Boy Scouts of America is celebrating its centennial this week.
Current and formal Eagle Scouts marked the event by gathering on the steps of courthouses across the country.
Such events took place Monday at the New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick, Columbus and Bladen County Court Houses. A much larger gathering was scheduled at the State Capitol in Raleigh.
Nationwide, millions of alumni took part in the ceremonies. They will nostalgically recall canoe trips, campfires, and hikes along country roads.

The Boy Scouts formed on Feb. 8 in Chicago 100 years ago. It was the invention of publisher W. D. Boyce who stole the idea after making a trip to Europe.
Every year the organization has about 4 million members.
