FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WECT) - The Cumberland County Sheriff's office is trying to start a major gun lock campaign.
Next week, on Thursday February 4th and Friday February 5th he Sheriff's Mobile Command Unit will be posted in the four corners of the county to distribute FREE gun locks.
Sheriff Earl Butler said he decided to do this "in light of the recent situation where a 7-year old brought a loaded handgun to school. On Tuesday a student at Elizabeth Cashwell Elementary brought a pistol into school. Detectives believe the child hid the gun in his book bag before leaving home and kept it hidden until lunchtime. School officials called police after the student threatened others with it. The next day deputies arrested the boy's mother and charged her with storing a firearm in a manner accessible to a minor.
In addition to the gun locks the Sheriff's office is also planning on giving out barouches and give demonstration on how the locks work.
