WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - After years of planning, searching for property, and securing funding, the Cape Fear Public Transportation will break ground for construction of a new Wave Station next week.
Wave Transit is accepting bids for the new "green" building. The facility will cost a little over $3 million and construction should begin in February.
Wave's current facility was built in 1935 and has been home to the Transit Authority since the 70s. Director Albert Eby says the building is not big enough for Wave's needs and is not energy efficient.
The new building will be located off Cando Street near Corning, and will have state-of-the-art green technology, including a growing roof and geo-thermal heating and cooling. Eby believes public transportation and being green go hand-in-hand.
The Wave board will award a contract for the new facility next week and hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the site Thursday, Jan. 28.
