BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A contractor discovered what he believes to be explosive materials below a home on 824 Pine Valley Drive in Navassa Wednesday morning.

Barbara Watson, who lives at the home, said crews were renovating her dining room when they found the objects in a crawl space below the fire place.

Construction worker Everette Jackson said he spotted an old box, and opened it to find long sticks with what appeared to be fuses on the end.

Representatives from the ATF out of Fayetteville and the New Hanover County explosives team both assessed the material, but say it was too old for identification.  Officials say they believe the objects could have been corroded industrial batteries.

According to Scott Garner with Brunswick County EMS, crews blew up the objects in a wooded area as a safety measure.

Several neighbors said they evacuated themselves for safety reasons and the entire road was blocked off.
