COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Earlier this week, the Columbus County Board of Elections met to discuss a dispute regarding the Fair Bluff mayoral race.

Incumbent Randy Britt says several people may have voted in towns where they do not reside.

Columbus County Board of Election member David McPherson said the board felt there was enough evidence presented that could change the outcome of the election, so they sent it to the State Board of Elections.

Now, county board members are trying to determine how to educate their residents so that the same mistakes don't happen again.  McPherson says education is the key and needs to be a priority.

"We put ads in the newspaper, but we need people to know they must live in city limits before they can vote," said McPherson.

While state election officials review the case, they could call for another election in Fair Bluff to settle the dispute.

According to Columbus County Board of Elections Director Carla Strickland, the Town of Fair Bluff would be responsible for paying for a new election.

Fair Bluff town officials say they have money in a fund balance account that could cover the additional costs.
