WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A Marine Corps captain, wounded in Fallujah, has a new best friend.
This yellow lab is named Titus and he now belongs to Captain Chris Ayres. Titus is a service dog with Wilmington's Carolina Canines. He is part of the organization's veterans program.
Titus was trained by inmates at the Camp Lejeune brig. He will leave Sunday for Houston, Texas with his new owner.
Ayres sustained a major leg injury in Fallujah several years ago and he's had a hard time getting around.
He says Titus will help him with everything from picking up items on the floor, to making him feel a little less pain at the end of the day.
"If I can prevent half of the stuff from happening with Titus being in my life, and helping me do certain things, I'm going to be a lot more enjoyable towards the end of the day. I'm not going to be so cranky. I'm not going to be as whooped towards the end of the day," says Ayres.
Titus was the 7th dog that Carolina Canines has placed with a wounded veteran.
