RALEIGH, NC (WECT) - Operation Slow Down/No Need 2 Speed is now underway in North Carolina.
The state Highway Patrol and Governor Bev Perdue kicked off the event at the NC Highway Patrol Training Center in Raleigh.
Local law enforcement officers and state troopers want to encourage people to slow down and follow the speed limit. They will be targeting speeders, especially on four lane highways.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol and the Governor's Highway Safety Program will kick off Operation Slow Down/No Need 2 Speed Wednesday, Nov. 18. The event will be held at 10 a.m. at the N.C. Highway Patrol Training Center, 3318 Garner Road, in Raleigh. Local law enforcement agencies are joining troopers to encourage drivers to slow down and follow the speed limit. The campaign starts today and runs through Nov. 29.
Secretary of Crime Control and Public Safety Reuben Young, N.C. State Highway Patrol Commander Col. Randy Glover, GHSP Director David Weinstein and Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison will be speaking at the event.
Following the event, the Wake County Traffic Safety Task Force will be conducting "No Wake Zone" a speed enforcement effort from 11a.m until 1p.m. on I-40 in Wake County. Approximately 20 officers will be using lidars and radars during the effort. Agencies participating include: N.C. State Highway Patrol, Wake County Sheriff's Office, Cary Police Department, Garner PD, Holly Springs PD, Knightdale PD, Morrisville PD, Raleigh PD and Wendell PD.
During the campaign, stepped-up enforcement and patrols will be conducted across the state. Officers will focus on motorists exceeding the posted speed limit on interstates and major four-lane highways.
