U.S. Senate candidate speaks at UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A candidate for North Carolina's Senate seat spoke at UNC Wilmington.

Democrat Kenneth Lewis plans to run next year for the seat currently held by Richard Burr. 

Lewis is an attorney from the Chapel Hill area. Born and raised in Winston-Samel, he is a graduate of Duke University and Harvard Law School.

Lewis worked for the NC Supreme Court Justice Henry Frye, the first African-American elected to the NC General Assembly in the 20th century and the first African-American to serve on the NC Supreme Court.

Lewis became a legal trailblazer himself as the first African-American lawyer hired by Moore & Van Allen, one of the state's largest law firms and later started his own law firm so that he could use his skills to help small businesses and non-profit organizations succeed and grow.

He told the crowd at UNCW, he wants to bring a new leadership to Washington... one that understands local communities and the needs of its people.

Lewis says his campaign will be about progress, innovation, and opportunity for North Carolina residents.
