BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Brunswick County authorities are investigating what they say is a suspicious house fire in Sunset Harbor.
Duane and Carol Linker of Rockingham, are used to coming to their daughter's beach home to relax and reunite with family and to take in the gorgeous sunsets.
But when they went to what was left of the home Monday, they were devastated as they looked at the rubble and debris left from a weekend fire.
"It's gut wrenching," said Carol. "The fact that it's gone and it meant so much to so many."
At least four fire departments responded to a call that came in around 10:30 Saturday night. They battled flames for hours, but the house was destroyed.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, but say it was likely arson. That news is tough for Carol and Duane to take in because the home was shared through generations.
"It was a great family home, because all of us shared - five step children, brothers and sisters, and grandchildren - we all spent summers down here," said Duane.
