WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Two Ashley High seniors made history Sunday night by breaking a world record on the tennis court.

Over the weekend, lifelong friends Jackson Morton and Brian McSteen set out to beat the tennis record at Echo Farms Country Club in Wilmington.

They needed to play tennis for 33 hours, 33 minutes and 34 seconds to break the record for longest non-professional singles tennis match in history.

They ended up playing for 36 hours, three minutes and 11 seconds.

They started playing at six o'clock Saturday morning, played throughout the night, and wrapped up Sunday evening.

"I don't know if words will be able to describe how they feel,” said Morton's mother, Amy Morton.

“It's going to feel good to fall asleep,” said McSteen.

“Shaking hands with Brian at the end of the match is going to be the best handshake of my life,” said Morton.

Morton and McSteen were allowed to take a five minute break each hour. In order for the record to be official, the entire match has to be videotaped with two witnesses watching at all times.
