NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Members of the Historic Wilmington Foundation honored a local treasure tonight.

They honored Hannah Block as part of their "Celebration of Coastal Treasures" event.

The annual gathering is a fundraiser for the foundation that works to protect historic resources in the city.

Mrs. Block is a longtime advocate for Wilmington, serving on city council for many years.

At 96, she was not able to make the event.

Her family says her health is rapidly fading.

"This is not a tragedy. My mother has had a very long, full life and certainly she's lead her life the way she wanted to lead it. So, she's got a lot to be thankful for, as do we all for what she's been able to do," said Frank Block, Hannah Block's son.

Tonight's event was held in the historic U.S.O building downtown -- appropriately named after Hannah Block.
