NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A woman from New Hanover County has received the North Carolina Medallion for Outstanding Volunteer Service.

Donna Sweetman, an advanced trainer for the Carolina Canines, was one of eight volunteers in the area who was honored for her valuable services to the community.

"These volunteers deserve our congratulations for serving their communities," said Gov. Bev Perdue.  "We should be especially grateful because when times are tough, volunteers are even more important to those in need."

Since the program began in 1978, about 16,000 individuals have been recognized for their service.  Medallion recipients are nominated at the county level then evaluated by a panel of community service leaders from across the state.

Recipients were honored by Perdue at a ceremony in the State Capitol where they each received a medallion and a certificate in recognition of their service.

The following are this year's recipients from Eastern North Carolina:

Beaufort County       John Morgan

Carteret County        Richard Eisemann

Gates County             Dillon Kyle Chappell

New Hanover             Donna Sweetman

Onslow County          William Sidberry

Pasquotank County  Sonja Hibbard

Perquimans County  Rosemary Smith

Tyrrell County          Andrew Swain
