WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - UNCW nursing students are hosting a fundraiser to help aid the Kay Whitfield School of Nursing Endowed Scholarship.
The scholarship was formed in memory of Kay Whitfield, a Wilmington woman who died from Ovarian Cancer in 2004. According to the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer is the deadliest cancer among female reproductive cancers. An estimated 14,600 women will die from ovarian cancer in 2009.
Over the years, three nursing students have received the Kay Whitfield award, and tow have graduated and are already working as nurses.
"It's been a real blessing," said Amanda Lisk, Whitfield's daughter. "I'm been missing my mom real bad and as bad as I don't want to ask anyone for money, I'm actually able to do this fundraiser be surrounded and able to tell people about her again and go to Thunder Ally. Everyone gets a discount if they go."
The nursing students were able to raise over $1,500 for the scholarship fund, which surpasses their initial goal of $500.
