WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - An ample amount of hand sanitizer is just one of the precautions being taken against potential threats to UNCW's graduation.
Before Friday afternoon's first commencement ceremony, UNCW looked and sounded more like Wilmington International Airport.
Because of a bomb threat last week, campus police added extra security and got help from other law enforcement agencies to ensure graduates and families stay safe.
"Earlier today we did a security sweep of the building, and since then everyone entering the building has been screened," said UNCW Police Chief David Donaldson. "We have had a lot of support from other agencies, both local and federal. People coming in are being cooperative. Today has proven to be a celebration as anticipated."
The long lines that many visitors expected never really materialized.
"I think it's good," said parent Maureen Suriano. "You have to be cautious in the times we live in. It's just all for precaution."
In addition to security risks, school officials are worried about the H1N1 virus. All graduates are required to use hand sanitizer before shaking the hand of the chancellor.
"It's good that they are taking preventative measures," said student Jordan Hinkley. "It's not that big of a deal to me."
