WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A sculpture of a seahawk now soars in front of Hoggard Hall on the UNCW campus.

Local artist Dumay Gorham designed and built the 2,000 pound copper mascot sculpture at his studio on 5th Avenue in Wilmington.

Gorham said it's the world's largest sculpture of a seahawk, with a wing span of nearly 20 feet.  UNCW will submit the sculpture to the Guinness Book of World Records for consideration as largest sculpture of a seahawk

Gorham spent nearly a year working on the piece for UNCW.

The sculpture was commissioned by Charlotte philanthropist Irwin "Ike" Belk and is a personal gift from him to UNC Wilmington. No UNCW or state funds are being used for the project.
