WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - On Saturday, hundreds of UNCW students did their part to help wounded veterans and had a good time doing it.

Close to 300 people ran, spiked, passed and dribbled to raise money during the first ever Sports for Soldiers event.

"We are raising money for the Fisher House which goes to support wounded vets and their families and allows them to stay for free when their loved ones are going through rehab or surgery," said Kappa Sigma brother Bryce McLaughlin.

His fraternity sponsored the all-day event. The guest of honor was a former Kappa Sigma brother, U.S. Army Major Jonathan Harvey.

"I'm always impressed and in awe of the civilian support for the military," said Harvey.

He was even more impressed to see that a college campus was hosting the event.

"Most college kids, ages 18 to 24, are worried about college and jobs and how much Raman they have left in the fridge. To see them come out and spend all day like this and raise money to this magnitude to go to a great organization to support soliders is phenomenal," said Harvey.

Organizers said they were thrilled by the more than $2500 raised.

Brothers with Kappa Sigma hope to turn Sports for Soliders into an annual event.
