Hundreds without power after driver hits power pole, flees scene

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A Chevy Silverado pickup truck hit a power pole near the intersection of Carolina Beach Rd. and Shipyard Blvd. in Wilmington on Friday night.

According to officials on scene, the driver of the truck fled after wrecking around 9:40 p.m. The airbag deployed in the Silverado.

Traffic lights at the intersection of Carolina Beach Rd. and Shipyard Blvd. were knocked out, but as of 11 p.m. they were working again. The traffic signals at the Carolina Beach and the Raleigh/Parkway intersections were still out at 11 p.m. and there were no lights on at the businesses along that stretch of Carolina Beach all the way up Independence Boulevard.

According to a Duke Energy power outage map, more than 1,000 customers are being affected and are without power. The estimated restoration time is 12:30 a.m.
