WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Nestled in the Chandler’s Wharf shops in downtown Wilmington is a small gathering space, one hoping to expand your palette with a new way to drink coffee.
Grow N.C., founded by Gus Villapiano, opened Thursday in Wilmington. The shop offers coffee from Lucky Joe’s in Wilmington, cocktails, healthy food and other items.
What’s most unique is the cannabidiol (CBD) additive that you can pop in your java.
“There is no other coffee shop in town doing this," Villapiano said. "We offer 40 mg or 20 mg of CBD that is combined with Stevia. It’s a ready-made packet you can pop right in your coffee.”
CBD is a chemical compound found in a hemp plant. Unlike THC, which makes the user feel high, CBD does not have any conscious-altering effects.
While the hype around CBD has exploded the last couple of years, scientific research is still relatively young. But studies that have been conducted show promising results to help ease a variety of conditions, including anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, insomnia, and chronic pain.
“A lot of people haven’t tried CBD because it’s not widely available,” said Villapiano. “Coffee is a daily thing but CBD is not. So this is a way we can try to work it in to your routine and see if it works for you."
In addition to CBD and coffee, Villapiano hopes his charming, exposed-brick, built-from-scratch shop will operate as a forum where conversation as well as coffee can flow.
“A sense of community is what I am looking to build," he said. "You can go anywhere and get a cup of coffee, but come here and hang out and become friends and let’s network and build something special.
"A lot of people have great ideas. We just don’t act on them.”
Grow N.C is located at 225 Water Street Suite J and is open Tuesday-Saturday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
