WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - A man was arrested Thursday for the December 2017 shooting death of a Whiteville man.
According to a news release from Major Alan May of the Whiteville Police Department, Cory Hines, 22, of Whiteville, was served with an arrest warrant charging him with the murder Elliot Dew. Hines was in Columbus County Court on Thursday for a probation and parole hearing and in addition to the murder charge, he is charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.
Hines is in custody at the Sampson County Jail with no bond for a November 2017 shooting and is awaiting a trial date on the new charges.
On Dec. 11, 2017, at 11:30 p.m., Dew was shot while sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle parked in the Happy Mart parking lot at the corner of JK Powell Blvd. and Virgil St. WPD investigators said it may have been retaliation for a Nov. 26, 2017, shooting at Saw Mill Apartments.
Deron Dewitt Blanks, the driver of the parked vehicle, fell out of the driver's side door during the Happy Mart shooting.
Dew, the passenger, was shot in the upper body and died after being taken to Columbus Regional Hospital. Blanks, 36, was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
The store clerk who was working during the shooting said he was at the register when he heard more than 10 gunshots. He said he called 911 and ran outside, but the suspect or suspects in the shooting had gotten away.
"(The victim) fell to the ground. He tried to stand up and hit the wall and he was just flopping back and forth," the clerk said. "I went over to the car and it was one of our customers and he was covered in blood. He asked me if he has been shot in the head, if he had a hole in his head or if they missed him, and he just started screaming, 'They killed my friend. They killed my friend.'"
May said in the news release a suspect was identified shortly after the shooting.
