Hundreds of Christmas trees collected in Surf City to help with dunes

SURF CITY, NC (WECT) - Surf City residents answered the call when town officials asked for their Christmas trees to use in helping rebuild sand dunes.

Officials estimate about 500 Christmas trees have been collected so far. They will be used to help repair sand dunes that were washed out by Hurricane Florence.

The town is asking that oceanfront property owners call town hall at 910-328-4131 or to email clerk@townofsurfcity.com if they want to have a tree placed along their dune.

A community event, which will include the placement of trees and a beach sweep, will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, at noon at the Roland Ave. Beach Access.

“It’s really important for this year because of being hit by that storm," Parks and Recreation Director Chad Merritt said last month. “We’ve lost so much beach. Anything that we can do right now is a big help.”
