WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Shrita Parker scored a game-high 17 points to lead UNCW’s women’s basketball team past the College of Charleston 71-49 in the Seahawks’ Colonial Athletic Association opener Friday at Trask Coliseum.
Parker led four Seahawks in double-figure scoring. Lacey Suggs had 16 points, GiGi Smith scored 13 and Chinyere Bell finished with 12.
“We put our foot on the gas pedal,” Parker about holding the Cougars to four second-quarter points.
“What a great defensive effort by our team,” UNCW coach Karen Barefoot said after her team improved to 8-4. “I wanted them to come out aggressive and they did.”
UNCW played in front of a Seahawks Tomorrow crowd of 4,511 and ran its win streak to three games.
“I know our players wanted to do it for the kids,” Barefoot said about the New Hanover County Schools students in attendance for Friday morning’s tip-off.
UNCW plays again Jan. 11 at William & Mary.
