BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Heavy rain can do more than make roadways wet and slippery.
Residents in a Brunswick County neighborhood in Bolivia are having to plan for rainy day travel just to get beyond Orchard Lane, a private road they say becomes virtually impassable when it rains.
"We’re having a time trying to get in or out of this road," said Orchard Lane resident Cathy Schneider. "Everybody’s getting bogged. We can’t come check our mail. The kids are having to walk to the end of the road and through all this mess, and vehicles are getting torn up coming through here. Something's got be done about it."
Schneider said numerous cars have had to be pulled out of the mud, and a parent added that school buses have to drop children off at the entrance of Orchard Lane to avoid getting stuck.
Since it is a private road, there isn’t much the county can do, but County Manager Ann Hardy said staffers check to make sure emergency accesses are available and that the road is being evaluated.
