NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A simple request. Third grade Castle Hayne Elementary teacher Mr. Trevor Todd was asking for headphones for his students. Within an hour of this report posted online, the community helped to fulfill his wish!
Todd’s classroom breaks up into smaller groups and rotates through digital teacher stations for learning. Mr. Todd works directly with one of the groups at a time to improve interaction with students in a large class. Students have to mute the digital programs so the classroom isn’t loud with everyone’s individual computer instructions.
"It would be very distracting if the person next to you is on one lesson and you're on another lesson and you're having to listen in and hear what other people are doing," Todd explained.
So, Todd signed up with Donors Choose, an online charity that helps teachers get money for projects not included in school budgets.
Todd will use the new headphones for his students so they can continue using the digital programs effectively to enhance their learning.
"I just want to give my students the best and let them have the best opportunities. I know that some of them are not able to provide the best supplies, and so if I can do that for them, that's going to alleviate some of their stress which will make their learning come easier."
Now that the project is fully funded, Donors Choose will purchase and deliver the headphones to Castle Hayne Elementary.
Todd isn’t the only teacher in the area in need of supplies. There are several teachers asking for help to fund various projects. If you would like to donate to their cause, click here. Several organizations have posted on the site they will also make donations or matching contributions for various projects in the area.
