WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Dozens of kids will have an extra merry Christmas with the help of the Wilmington Police Department.

More than 50 local children each received a $100 gift card and got to go on a shopping spree at Walmart with local law enforcement officers as part of the Santa Cop program.

Officer B.L. Jacobs with the WPD was taking part in the event for the first time, and said the child he was paired with came prepared.

“It was amazing,” Jacobs said. “This kid was awesome. It was a brilliant idea. He came in before today and scoped the place out to figure out what he wanted.

“It was a great time.”

The WPD has hosted the program since 1990.
