WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Hard work has paid off for former Ashley High School football player Alex Highsmith.
He has gone from a walk-on defensive end to a starter for the Charlotte 49ers football team.
Highsmith walked on to the team as a freshman in 2015, and quickly showed his talents on the practice squad.
“A lot of coaches noticed how hard I was working, trying to get the guys better on the starting offense,” said Highsmith. “Then I had a great spring and ended up being the leading tackler in the spring game.”
Since that day, Highsmith hasn’t stopped trying to impress the coaching staff.
“I stay extra and watching film,” Highsmith said. “I do extra reps in the weight room and just giving great effort on the practice field.”
The coaching staff awarded Highsmith with a scholarship after his sophomore season, and he continues to improve. This season, he earned all-Conference USA honors as a junior.
Now going into his final season, Highsmith has set some lofty goals. He wants to be an All-American.
“There are always ways I can improve,” said Highsmith. “If I have a good game or a bad game, I can improve.”
