Gang member assaulted officer at Wilmington police station, officials say

Validated gang member allegedly assaults officer

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Police Department arrested a validated gang member after he allegedly assaulted an officer during a family altercation at the police station Sunday morning.

According officials, police received a call around 8 a.m. from Joseph Point’s mother saying she and her boyfriend were being followed by Point who was armed with a gun.

The couple ran into the lobby of the Wilmington Police Department, located at 615 Bess Street, and Point soon followed, lunging at his mother’s boyfriend.

A desk officer at the police station stepped between the two men and tried to break up the altercation. Point allegedly assaulted the officer before leaving the lobby.

An officer outside the lobby managed to take Point into custody.

The desk officer was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and treated for minor injuries.

Point, 28, was charged with assault inflicting serious injury on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and stalking. He was additionally charged with a probation violation and given a $125,000 bond.
