Deadline to apply for FEMA assistance extended to Dec. 19

SOUTHEASTERN NC (WECT) - The last day for Hurricane Florence survivors to register for disaster assistance from FEMA is Dec. 19.

Gov. Roy Cooper requested and received a deadline extension in early November and the deadline was extended again Thursday at Cooper’s request. The deadline to register is Dec. 19 at 11:59 p.m.

"We want to make sure that our hurricane survivors get the help they need to get their lives back on track,” Cooper said in a news release. “I urge anyone impacted by Hurricane Florence to register with FEMA right away.”

FEMA spokesperson Rebecca Kelly said Wednesday the New Hanover County Independence Mall site will remain open indefinitely.

To register for FEMA assistance:

  • Go online to disasterassistance.gov
  • Call 800-621-3362 or 800-462-7585 from 7 a.m.-11 p.m. seven days a week. Multilingual operators are available.

Kelly said FEMA has provided more than $1 billion in relief funding for North Carolinians affected by the hurricane and of the households that requested it, 99 percent have been inspected.

She added that more than 40,000 people have visited disaster recovery centers.
