Jesus Berrones, 62, of Manchester, N.H., was traveling north on U.S. 421 when his Toyota crossed the center line and struck a Chevrolet SUV driven by Arnold Murphy Jr. of Burgaw.
Both men were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where they later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
No other injuries were reported.
Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, according to Highway Patrol officials.
