WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Several stores in the area are still recovering from Hurricane Florence, and they hoped the holiday weekend would help get them back on their feet.
The owners of Modern Legend on Front Street downtown said Black Friday and Small Business Saturday sales surpassed all other numbers in their two-year history.
“I feel like a lot of people decided to shop small intentionally because of the hurricane and just wanted to keep their money local and help their neighbors out, which was really cool," said Haley Smith, social media and website coordinator for Modern Legend. “It was really awesome.”
Other downtown business owners said they think the storm led to bad business this holiday weekend. Some said their location in the Cotton Exchange may have contributed to the low numbers due to ongoing construction and possible parking problems near the stores.
Those owners didn’t want to be quoted for this story, but said their sales were cut in half compared to years past.
Most of the shops were closed for a while due to Florence. Modern Legend was closed for about one month.
Owners there said in order for local shops to stay alive, they need to have an online presence.
“Wilmington is a tourist town. There’s people from all over who come here and I would say a good chunk of the tourists who come here already know who we are by the time they get into Wilmington because they’re online or they’re on Instagram and they’re looking at what do we have to offer from Wilmington," Smith said. "I’d say it is crucial to at least have a landing page with your information on there, but I’d say it’s really beneficial with an online store with at least some of your products listed and available.”
Modern Legend is offering free shipping and $10 off of every $50 you spend online until midnight on Cyber Monday.
Little Angels Boutique in the Cotton Exchange is offering up to 50 percent off until around 6 p.m.
Camillions Boutique on Market Street is offering 25 percent off the entire store, a free snowflake necklace and free shipping to online shoppers until midnight on Cyber Monday.
